The Sound of Buzz Pollination

Click on the image to hear a buff-tailed bumblebee (Bombus terrestris) buzz pollinating the flowers of Solanum (the genus that includes tomatoes, potatoes, and eggplant).

The image below is a spectrogram, a visual representation of sound. The horizontal axis represents time, and the vertical axis is frequency or pitch of that sound. The colour is intensity, or how loud the sound energy is at that point. The staircase pattern arises from harmonics of the sounds of the bee as it flies and buzz pollinates. You can clearly distinguish flight and floral buzzing by their different patterns. Can you tell which one is which?
